2008 Distinguished Service Award Mike and Sherry Wade of Maryland were awarded the ARBA Distinguished Service Award. Although Mike sadly passed away this summer, Sherry was present with their children to receive the award at the PaSRBA banquet. Mike and Sherry have been avid supporters of the ARBA and 4-H programs for a number of years. They have been ARBA members since 1990, and during this time have been instrumental in promoting the rabbit and cavy fancies throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. Their initial involvement was prompted by the interest of their children, Mike Jr. and Jennifer, but has continued to grow even as their children grew up and pursued other activities. One would be hard pressed to think that any number of the youth you see them working with at shows were not their own children!
Mike and Sherry have held offices and actively participated in many local and region rabbit/cavy organizations; but are best known for their work with the Carroll Co R&CB and Carroll Co. 4-H Clubs. One would witness their faithful service throughout the years at each of the shows, spring and fall. Mike and Sherry were show officials at 12 shows one year! All this hard-work and involvement could potentially take a toll on some individuals, but you would consistently receive kind greetings and unwavering help from each of them. Their service to the youth members of our association is equally outstanding. Mike and Sherry participated in not only hosting local rabbit and cavy workshops, but would also help other organizations with their educational programs as well. Their daughter, Jennifer, is a past PaSRBA Rabbit Queen; perhaps the only PaSRBA Rabbit Queen to not actually live in Pennsylvania. Mike and Sherry remained supportive of not only the MD youth programs, but were quick to volunteer with the PA programs as well. Mike and Sherry have raised a few breeds over the years, but have been most heavily involved with Rex. They have been staunch supporters of the Mason Dixon Rex Club from nearly its formation. Sherry has also faithfull, and dutifully served as an ARBA State Representative for 4.5 years.
The consistent, progressive, and tireless support they have provided to members and organizations within the rabbit/cavy fancy are more than admirable. The ARBA owes a debt of gratitude to the Wade family, and they are certainly more than deserving of the ARBA Distinguished Service Award.
